Water Basketball

Play begins the week of February 7th

Maximum of 5 players per team
Male and Female Division

Games played in the Pepper Natatorium
Games are played at the shallow end of the pool so you do not need to be an expert swimming to play.

Any team that comprised of all females will be allowed one extra player to be in the pool at all times if a separate female league is not formed.  However, the team must follow all other rules.

All standard basketball rules that are not redefined by these Water Basketball Rules apply, such as goaltending will not be allowed.  Goaltending will be called if the defending team knocks down a ball that is on a downward trajectory towards the hoop.

Time-Out/Substitutions

  • Each team is allowed one time-out per game (Approx. 20 Seconds)

  • Substitutions are permitted during dead ball situations.

Scoring

  • Any basket made from anywhere in the pool is worth 1 point.

  • All games played to 15
Games have 30 minute time limit.

  • Tie score at end of game will result in 2 minute overtime.

Fouls/Violations

  • All games are self officiated.

  • Any dispute will be settled by recreational workers.  Their decision is FINAL.

  • Violations resulting in a loss of possession include:
Taking the ball completely underwater—without the assistance of an opposing player
    Climbing out of the pool
Using the pool walls in anyway offensively or defensively to aid in play

  • Fouls include actions both above and below the water

  • A player holds, dunks, or splashes an opponent.

  • Unnecessary roughness Unsportsmanlike like conduct.

A Rec. Sport Supervisor's judgment will supersede if action is placing opponent at personal (life endangering) disadvantage.

    No Foul Shooting

  • No Basket:  A team that is fouled shall be awarded one point and possession of the ball.
  • Basket Made:  The fouled team shall receive the points for the basket, one point for the foul, and possession of the ball will go to the other team.
  • Intentional Fouls:  A team that is fouled intentionally shall be awarded two points and possession of the ball.

Live ball/Dead ball/ possession

  • After a dead ball the ball must be checked back into play by the defender behind the indicated line.

  • Ball changes possession after made basket.

  • When a jump ball is called during a game, the ball will be awarded to the defensive team

  • The ball must be “checked” by an opposing player before it is put into play.  The player must pass the ball at the top of the court and start play.

  • All Violations will be played out of bounce at the top of the court.  A ball out of bounds will be taken out at the top of the court.

  • The ball must be taken past the three-point line on change of possession.  Violation occurs if basket is made by tame failing to cross line and it will result in loss of point scored and possession to other team.

  • The ball will be considered out of bounds if it goes out onto the deck or gets stuck in the gutter.  Anything beyond the assigned marker is out of bounds.  The ball going out of bounds results in an automatic turn over at the spot where the ball went out of bounds.

Any behavior considered life endangering by the lifeguard or Rec. Sport intern will result in one warning for the entire duration of the league.  Upon a 2nd offense it will result in expulsion from the league
