Foreign Language

Foreign Language Tips
 | Study every day. A foreign
language course is different from other courses you take. You cannot
put off studying until the weekend. If you want an A or B you should
study 1 or 2 hours for every class hour.
|
 | Distribute your study time. Spend
about 15 to 30 minutes throughout the day studying. Focus on a
different task each time you study (vocabulary now, grammar later).
|
 | Attend and participate in class
without fail. Class time is your primary opportunity for practice.
Try to learn grammar and vocabulary outside of class in order to
make the most of class time.
|
 | Make yourself comfortable in the
class. Get to know both your classmates and your professor better so
you feel comfortable during class.
|
 | Learn English grammar if you don't
already know it.
|
 | Practice for tests. Do what you
will be expected to do on the exam when you are studying. If you
have to write on the exam, then practice writing.
|
 | Develop a good attitude. Have a
personal reason for taking the class.
Get help if you need it. Talk to your teacher, form study groups or
use the tutoring services. |
Reading Skills Tips
 | Read the vocabulary list for the
assignment. Read the questions over the reading. Then read all the
way thought a new passage or two, guessing the meaning from the
context. Avoid word for word translation.
|
 | Isolate new vocabulary and study
it separately. Make flash cards. Carry them with you and recite them
several time during the day at odd moments.
|
 | Isolate new grammatical forms and
study them separately. Write the pattern on a flash card and
memorize it. Write out and label a model sentence. |
Writing Skills Tips
 | Pay attention to details. Memorize
irregular verbs.
|
 | To practice spelling have a friend
say the words and have you spell them out loud or write them down on
paper and the have your friend spell the word to you.
|
 | Repeat until you get the word
correct.
|
 | Write a story you have just read. |
Listening Skills Tips
 | Study out loud. Mimic the sounds
of the language.
|
 | If you are called on in class, say
something, even if it’s wrong, you will learn from it.
|
 | Practice with a foreign student
who wants your help learning English or with another class member. |
English as a Second Language
 | Below are some reading tips to
help if English is a second or foreign language.
|
 | Have an English-Foreign Language
Dictionary. It will help you translate unfamiliar words.
|
 | Use context clues. Use other words
in the sentence or paragraph to help you figure out unknown words.
|
 | Seek out someone who is trying to
learn your language and help them in return for them helping you
learn English. Having someone who knows the language first hand can
be helpful to explain any slang or uncommonly used words.
|
 | Ask your professors for help with
reading assignments you don’t understand. Professors are here to
help you. You have to ask questions or they don’t know that you are
having problems.
|
 | Create flashcards with the
commonly used English words and their translation. |
