KIMOTO SETS NEW SCORING RECORD AS FIGHTING SCOTS DROP FINAL WOMEN’S SOCCER HOME MATCH
Monmouth, IL -- The Monmouth women’s soccer team ended its 1998 campaign with a 3-1 non-conference loss to Illinois Wesleyan on a muddy Bobby Woll Field on Friday afternoon. The loss evened the Fighting Scots’ season record at 8-8 after Monmouth had finished Midwest Conference action at 4-5.
The final match of the season brought a close to the collegiate careers of several Monmouth players, including senior forward Tisha Kimoto (Pittsford,NY/ Waubonsie Valley [IL] HS). Kimoto established a new Monmouth record for most individual goals in a season and most points scored in a single-season with her first-half goal. It was her 12th goal of the season, breaking her old mark of 11 set last year. Her 29 total points (12 goals, 5 assists) also eclipsed the previous team mark of 23, which she had jointly held with teammate Jessica Adams (Harvard, IL/HS). The totals also increased Kimoto’s four-year scoring marks to 32 goals and 71 points for her record-setting Monmouth career.
Monmouth held a 1-0 lead at halftime on Kimoto’s record-setting score, which came with 17:55 on the clock in the first period. She beat the IWU goalie on a pass from senior defensive back Malinda Springer (Woodstock,IL/HS). The lead held only three minutes after the break as Wesleyan scored the equalizer against junior goalie Colleen Shaughnessy (Springfield,IL/ Ursuline Academy), who was credited with eight saves in the nets. The Titans then managed two more goals in the final 30 minutes to secure the victory and keep the Fighting Scots from their second straight winning season. Monmouth finished the 1997 season with an 8-7 record for the first above-.500 campaign in team history.
