Release Date:
February 27, 2010
MONMOUTH, Ill. —
The men’s track team has gone where no Midwest Conference
team has gone before. The Scots won their 11th straight conference
title last weekend and the women aren’t far behind, capturing their
ninth consecutive league crown.
Monmouth’s men and women ran away from the field in the two-day
conference championships hosted by Knox College. Roger Haynes
was named men’s and women’s Coach of the Year while throwers
Gloria Lehr and Peyton Lumzy were selected as the Most
Outstanding Field Event Performers for the women and men,
respectively.
Four firsts in the field events propelled Monmouth’s men’s
eleven-peat as conference champs. Lumzy threw personal-bests in both
his throwing events. The junior won the weight throw with an
improved provisional mark of 56’2 and he took second in the shot put
at 51’3-1/2. Parker Woodall placed third in the weight and
Josh Williams’ personal-best throw of 48’7-1/4 placed him
fourth, just an inch behind Woodall. Sam Cokinos launched a
PR to take third in the shot at 50’0-1/2 and Woodall scored in fifth
place.
Nick Byom and Tyler Hannam fashioned a 1-2 finish
in the high jump and Sean Wells placed fourth. Byom and
Hannam each cleared 6’8-3/4, but Byom was declared the winner on
attempts despite Hannam’s personal-best effort.
Wells was able to take first in the triple jump with a
personal-best 44’6-1/4. The mark edged runner up Mike Blodgett
by a quarter inch. Nick Wright scored in sixth place.
Brock McAnally successfully defended his conference pole
vault title. The junior cleared 15’ to win easily.
The Scots’ remaining title came from Logan Hohl who also
defended his league crown. Hohl clocked a provisional time in the
finals of the 55-meter hurdles of 7.73 to win by more than a
tenth-of-a-second. He also ran to a seventh-place finish in the 400.
Blodgett, Nick Wright and Nick Law bunched team
points in the long jump where Blodgett took second, Wright fourth
and Law was sixth.
Saidu Sesay equaled his personal-best in the 55 dash,
clocking a 6.58 to place third. Kyle Prout was 12-hundredths
back in fourth. Sesay also turned in a career time in the 200 dash
to take third in 22.65. Prout scored in eighth place.
The Scots also picked up multiple points from Paul Davies
who placed fourth in the mile and sixth in the 3,000. Jon Welty
finished on Davies’ heals in the 3K to place seventh. Patrick
Mundschenk finished in seventh position in the 800 run and
Geoff Bird took eighth in the 5,000.
Monmouth’s relays scored big points. The 4x200 relay team of
Sesay, Prout, Blodgett and Hohl was second with an honor roll time
of 1:29.88. Hohl, Blodgett, Shane Reschke and Logan Weir
took second in the 4x400 relay finishing just two seconds off the
pace. Connor Shields, J.D. Holeman, Brian Daly
and Davies formed the third-place distance medley relay team. The
sprint medley placed sixth with Reschke, Weir, Tim Bentz and
Matt Dawson.
Much like the men’s team, the women’s field events got the Scots
off to a good start with three conference champions. Amanda
Streeter and Lehr were each successful in defending their
throwing crowns. Streeter’s improved provisional mark in the weight
throw led a sweep of the podium for the Scots. Her toss of 52’3-3/4
was just over a foot farther than runner up Lehr. Allison Devor
completed the sweep in third with a PR of 49’5. Lehr took the top
spot in the shot put with a provisional mark of 43’9-1/4. Devor
placed third with a personal-best throw of 40’4-1/4 while Streeter
placed fourth.
Sophomore MacKinsey Marquith soared a personal-best
17’2-3/4 to lead a 1-2 finish in the long jump. Chelsey Widdop
place second and Morgan Leffel was fifth.
Leffel continued a busy weekend as she and Jae Moore
scored to crucial points in the sprints. Moore placed second in the
55 dash just four-hundredths out of first and Leffel placed third.
Moore clocked a personal-best 26.43 to take second in the 200 where
Leffel was fifth. Moore clocked another PR in the 400 to place third
in 1:00.88. Leffel took fifth and Kaci Lierman was sixth.
Three Scots made the finals of the triple jump. Leffel captured
second, Marquith was fifth and Moore rounded out the trio in
seventh.
Two freshman and a junior bunched points in the 800. Freshman
Rachel Bowden captured second and classmate Aron Jackson
clocked a career-best 2:26.99 to finish fourth, just in front of
junior Lindsie Pettie in fifth.
A school record and a load of points in the Scots’ distance
events. Mary Kate Beyer and Katie Staab placed 3-4 in
the 5,000 run. Beyer’s time of 17:50.40 shattered her own school
record by 30 seconds. The pair also scored big points in the 3,000.
Beyer was third and Staab’s career-best 10:55.64 placed her seventh.
Bowden ran a PR of 5:18.63 to take fourth in the mile, Beyer was
seventh.
Whitney Didier cleared a personal-best 10’11-3/4 in the
pole vault to finish second. Leffel added another event to capture
fourth in the vault.
Widdop and Sarah Stinson scored in the high jump. Each
cleared 5’1-1/4, but Widdop was awarded fifth on attempts, Stinson
tied for sixth. Widdop and Markie Bacon finished fourth and
sixth in the 55 hurdles.
Three runner up finishes for the women’s relays. Moore, Lierman,
Jackson and Pettie took second in the sprint medley relay with a
Monmouth honor roll time of 4:23.63. Moore, Leffel, Lierman and
Widdop placed second in the 4x200 and the 4x400. Their 4x4 time of
4:07.88 was another honor roll time. Marlee Lane, Lexi
Frakes, Brittney Frazier and Bri Flynn formed the
sixth-place distance medley relay.
No team other than Monmouth has won a men’s Midwest Conference
Indoor crown since 2000, the women’s unbeaten string began in 2002.
