Release Date:
May 15, 2009
MONMOUTH, Ill. —
The Monmouth
College men’s golf team couldn’t quite equal yesterday’s round that
helped qualify them for the final two rounds of the NCAA Division
III Men’s Golf Championships, but they did gain some ground on a few
teams ahead of them at the start of play today.
The Fighting Scots
began the third round on the back nine at the Dye Course at Port St.
Lucie, Fla., and climbed their way past Carnegie-Mellon moving into
22nd-place. Their 313 today gave them a three-day score of 932.
Methodist University, the first round leader, reclaimed the top team
spot with today’s 289 to give them a 54-hole total of 871 and a four
stroke lead on Oglethorpe University.
Ted Starkey
followed yesterday’s solid round of 74 with a 1-over, 73 today for a
54-hole total of 230 to climb 40 places to 67th. Starkey rebounded
from triple-bogey on the 365-yard, par 4 4th hole with a trio of
birdies to lead the Scots in their third round. Rodney Clayton
toured the course with an 82 to card a 230, tying him with Starkey
and three others.
Two eagles on the day
– one on the 535-yard, par 5 No. 7 and the other on No. 14, a
396-yard, par 4 – helped Ryan Harvey post his third
consecutive 78 and check in with a three-day total of 234. Ryan
Tapscott nearly kept pace with his teammate. Tapscott checked in
with an 80 and a 54-hole score of 238. Greg Jones shook off a
tough start to complete his round with an 85 and a 257 total for the
tournament.
The Scots will be
among the first groups teeing off for the final round Saturday
morning at 7:30 (EDT). Fans may get hole-by-hole information via the
