Elk Grove’s Scholten to continue basketball career at MC

Release Date: May 20, 2004

MONMOUTH, Ill. — Scott Scholten, a multi-sport athlete from Elk Grove High School, plans to enroll at Monmouth College this fall and continue his basketball career with the Fighting Scots.

Named the 2004 Elk Grove High School Male Athlete of the Year, Scholten earned 11 varsity letters in basketball, soccer and volleyball. He also won the 2004 Howard Lester Award, given to one top senior male and female athlete in District 214, which has six high schools.

An all-conference performer in both soccer and volleyball, Scholten saved some of his most memorable moments for the hardwood, starting for three seasons and earning all-conference honors for a Grenadier team that won the Mid-Suburban League in 2002 and the league’s East Division the following season.

Scholten scored 11.1 points per game and dished out 178 career assists. As a senior, he had 84 assists and made a remarkable 58 percent of his three-point attempts.

“Scott is a solid basketball player, and we think he’s going to be a good one for us,” said Dr. Terry Glasgow, who has accumulated 439 victories, four Midwest Conference titles and numerous division championships in his 32 years as coach of the Fighting Scots. “I’m particularly impressed with his defense and his toughness. It’s also nice to see that he’ll be continuing a family tradition.”

Glasgow was referring to Scott’s grandfather, Richard Scholten, a member of Monmouth College’s Class of 1951, who lettered in basketball and baseball.

Elk Grove basketball coach Steve Messer said the Grenadiers’ foes will be glad to see Scholten move on.

“Scott has been a fixture of the Elk Grove basketball program. Countless times, opposing coaches have asked when No. 20 was going to graduate. Scott is the type of player who can transform his game to the needs of the team. He has practiced and played basketball with a passion that has made Elk Grove very proud.”

The son of Stephen and Margaret Scholten of Elk Grove, Scholten plans to study physical education at Monmouth.
