MONMOUTH, Ill. - Erin Mann, a state qualifier for Monmouth High
School in both cross country and track, will continue her running career at Monmouth
College, according to Roger Haynes, who coaches both sports for the Fighting Scots.
“Erin is a very solid addition to our track program,” said
Haynes. “She’s very versatile. I think she can run the 400 all the way up to some longer
distances, and I look for her to settle in at the middle distances, between 800 and
3,000 meters.”
Last week, Mann competed at the IHSA Class A Girls State Track &
Field Meet in Charleston, running on Monmouth’s 4x800 relay team. She was on the MHS
4x800 squad that placed 11th in the state in 2000.
Mann will first compete in cross country, and Haynes is high on
the outlook for that squad.
“We should show considerable improvement this fall,” he said.
“We’ve got some talented runners coming back, and Erin is part of a strong group of
runners that will be new to the team. Her work ethic and her ability will make her a
potential scorer for us right away.”
For the past three years, Mann has been part of Monmouth teams
that have qualified for the state cross country meet. Two years in a row, the team
placed 14th in the state, and Mann’s highest individual finish was 56th in 1999.
Mann, who also made it to state as part of the MHS girls
basketball team, is the daughter of Dennis and Denise Mann of Monmouth. Dennis Mann
coaches women’s basketball at Monmouth and will be the men’s and women’s tennis coach
when those sports are reinstated at the varsity level in 2002-03.
