Release Date: December 10, 2002
MONMOUTH,
Ill. – Melissa Jones (Port Byron, Ill./East Moline), Monmouth
College’s record-setting senior forward, has been honored by the
Midwest Conference as its Women’s Basketball Player of the Week.
The Scots standout has had many
great games in her career, but none better than last Wednesday's
effort against a Rockford College team that featured her sister,
Paula. Jones notched her 1,000th career point early in the contest
and kept scoring all game long, ultimately netting her school-record
36th and 37th points on a 10-foot jumper at the buzzer to give
Monmouth a thrilling 70-69 victory. She added a career-best 18
rebounds in the contest.
Jones then posted team-highs in
points (14), rebounds (7) and steals (3) in the Scots MWC opener
against Knox on Saturday, a 63-51 victory.
For the week, Jones averaged 25.5
points, 12.5 rebounds and 2.5 steals. She was 19-of-32 from the
field (59 percent).
