Thiel Named MWC Player of the Week
Release Date: May 6, 2002
Monmouth
College catcher Taylor Thiel (Galesburg, Ill./HS), picked up Midwest Conference Southern
Division Player of the Week honors for the week ending May 5.
Thanks to a record-tying doubleheader against Grinnell
Sunday, Thiel became the third Fighting Scot to earn Player of the Week honors this
season. Needing three home runs to tie Monmouth's single-season record, he accomplished
that feat as the Scots swept the Pioneers. Thiel finished the day 4-for-6 (.667) at the
plate with three homers, five runs batted in, four walks, seven runs scored and an
astronomical slugging percentage of 2.167. His five runs in one game equaled an MC
record.
The senior backstop now has 10 home runs on the season,
and is just one shy of Monmouth's career record. He will get a chance to break the
record this weekend when Monmouth hosts the MWC Championship Baseball Tournament Friday
and Saturday. Games begin at 10 a.m. and continue throughout the day both days.
