Joe Larkins Named MWC Player of the Week
Release Date: April 17, 2000
Joe Larkins, a Monmouth College sophomore from
Galesburg, had a huge last week
for the Fighting Scots baseball team against Illinois College, belting four home runs in
four games and pitching a one-hit, complete game victory.
Larkins’ all-around performance
earned the pitcher/designated hitter the Midwest Conference’s South Division Player of
the Week honor, the league announced Monday.
In a home doubleheader with IC
Wednesday, Larkins saved his best for the nightcap, going 4-for-5 with two homers. His
grand slam in the bottom of the eighth inning broke open a close game and gave him six
RBI for the contest.
Larkins then hurled a gem in the
opener of a doubleheader at Jacksonville Saturday, allowing just the one hit and three
walks while striking out six. Monmouth won 17-2, as Larkins allowed just one earned run.
In the nightcap, the sophomore slugger belted two more homers, but the Scots came up
short 8-5.
For the season, Larkins is hitting
.370 with a team-leading six homers and 17 RBI. His slugging percentage of .722 also
leads the team and he has a .433 on-base percentage.
In other Scots news, Steve Glasgow,
another sophomore from Galesburg, is riding a 12-game hitting streak as Monmouth
prepares to play four straight games against co-South leader Grinnell. The first two
games will be played Wednesday starting at 1 p.m. at Glasgow Field, where Monmouth has
yet to lose a game. |
