NATIONAL CHAMPION

Hannam claims national title

May 29, 2010Image of Tyler Hannam

The track team produced its seventh outdoor national champion and eighth overall Saturday at the 2010 NCAA Division III Outdoor Championships in Berea, Ohio.

It took a school record, but junior Tyler Hannam (Woodhull, Ill./AlWood) was up to the task and claimed the national championship in the high jump. His winning height of 6’11-1/2” made him the Fighting Scot’s second national champion in that event, following Monmouth’s first national champion, Eric Ealy in 1986. It’s Hannam’s second All-American award after tying for sixth at the indoor championships in March.

MIDWEST REGION TRACK ATHLETE OF THE YEAR

Reschke named Midwest Region's best

May 24, 2010Image of Luke Reschke

Eight-time All-American Luke Reschke (Geneseo, Ill./Geneseo) of Monmouth College has been named the NCAA’s Midwest Region’s best track athlete for 2010.

Reschke, a senior physical education major, was named the top Division III men’s track athlete in a vote of the more than 40 Midwest Region coaches. The Region includes three independent schools and six conferences: the Midwest Conference, College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin, University Athletic Association, Northern Athletics Conference, St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference and the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.

“This is a well-deserved recognition for Luke,” said coach Roger Haynes. “For the region’s coaches to select him as the region’s best runner is an outstanding achievement and a testament to his hard work. He has typified the type of success a student-athlete can achieve through dedication and hard work.”

The announcement letter from Sam Seemes of the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) explains the annual award is a reflection of perseverance and dedication to track and field during the 2010 outdoor season. Reschke broke numerous school records and enters this week’s NCAA Outdoor Championships in Berea, Ohio, with the nation’s top time in the 400-meter dash.

Reschke is one of eight finalists for the Division III National Track Athlete of the Year. The final award will be announced next week.

Reschke, Hannam sweep weekly awards

April 21, 2010

Competing as last Saturday’s Augustana Meet of Champions, Luke Reschke (Geneseo, Ill./Geneseo) and Tyler Hannam (Woodhull, Ill./AlWood) turned in outstanding performances. The pair broke one school record and tied another to sweep the MWC Performers of the Week award for men.

Reschke broke his own school record at the Meet of Champions to be named the men’s track POW. The senior speedster clocked a school record and provisional qualifying time of 47.52 to win the 400-meter dash by nearly a full second. His nation’s best time was just two-hundredths shy of the automatic qualifying time. He was also third in the 200 with a time of 21.99 which ranks him third in the Midwest Conference. Reschke also ran a leg on the fourth-place 4x100 relay which clocked a conference-best 42.46 and the seventh-place 4x400 relay.

Hannam – the men’s field event POW – turned in the nation’s top mark in the high jump at the Meet of Champions.
