5/25/00 --
Scott Stanton qualified for the finals in the 110-meter hurdles by
running a time of 14.69. Although that
time was only the fifth-fastest of the day, Stanton could be in very good
shape for the final. Just one athlete, Christopher
Cobbs, clocked a time at the national meet that was below Stanton's
season-best (14.45).
5/25/00 --
Justin Bryant failed in his attempt to qualify for Saturday's national finals,
running a time of 21.79 in his
200-meter dash qualifying heat. The slowest time to reach the finals was
21.64.
5/19/00 --
Several Monmouth athletes tried to lower their times or increase their
distances at Augustana's "Last
Chance" meet, but when the night was over, the Scots still had the
same five provisional and automatic qualifiers
as they did when they entered the meet. Those five are 110-meter hurdler Scott
Stanton, shot putter Eric Holmes,
100- and 200-meter sprinter Justin Bryant and high jumper Cort
Mills. Monmouth's best finish at Augie was a pair of
seconds, turned in by Mills in the high jump (6'5) and the 4x100 team of
Bryant, Matt Beverly, David Hodge and
Amon Shelby.
5/13/00 --
The Fighting Scots were edged 196-195 by Carroll at the Midwest
Conference outdoor meet. The
championship came down to the final race, the 4x400, and two drops of the
baton dropped Monmouth down to
fifth place, enabling Carroll, which won the relay, to overcome a
five-point deficit heading in. Individual champions
for
the Scots included Scott Stanton in both hurdle races, Bryant in the 200, Eric Holmes in the shot put, Aaron
Calder in the 800, Cort Mills in the high jump and David Hodge in the triple jump. Holmes was named one of the
meet's
three Most Outstanding Performers.
5/6/00 --
In terms of national qualification, the women have been dominating the
headlines lately, but it was
men's turn today at the Bobby Woll Invite. Three Scots - Justin Bryant,
Cort Mills and Scott Stanton - came
close to school records, and all three improved their standing for the
national meet. Stanton automatically qualified
for the 110-meter hurdles (14.45), as did Bryant in the 200-meter dash
(21.51). Bryant also equaled the provisional
time in the 100-meter dash (10.76). Mills improved his provisional mark in
the high jump to 6'9-1/2.
4/29/00 --
Justin Bryant brought home two firsts, one in the 400 meters and
another in the 200 to lead a
strong showing by the Scots. Cort Mills cleared 6'8 in the high
jump to capture first while the 4x100 relay
team broke the tape. In all the Scots placed in the top three in
eight events at the Loras Invitaional.
4/25/00 -- Scott
Stanton, Eric Holmes and Justin Bryant were double-winners
for Monmouth at a rare
home meet. Stanton swept the hurdles, Holmes won the shot and discus and
Bryant broke the tape in the
100 and 200. In all, the Scots men posted 11 firsts, with other winners
including Matt Hargleroad in the
steeplechase, Cort Mills in the high jump, David Hodge in
the long jump, Aaron Walker in the pole vault and
the 4x400 relay team.
4/22/00 -- Scott
Stanton recorded the men's only win of the day at the Dick Young Classic in
Grinnell,
breaking the tape in the 110-meter hurdles at 14.91. He added a third in the 400-meter
hurdles (54.73).
Near-misses in the terms of hitting a provisional mark came from the men's 4x100 squad
(.47 shy at 42.51)
and Justin Bryant in the 200-meter dash (.18 shy at 21.90). The men
posted four seconds and a third
in addition to Stanton's finishes.
4/15/00 -- Monmouth didn't win any events at the Lee Calhoun Invitational,
and their performances
didn't count in the meet scoring, but the Fighting Scots did turn in efforts that would
have been
good for runner-up finishes at the Division I-caliber meet. Eric Holmes(shot
put),Aaron Walker
(pole vault), Cort Mills (high jump) accomplished the feats. Holmes and
Mills set provisional national
qualifying marks in their events.
4/8/00 -- Monmouth finished 4th
of 18 teams at the Washington University Invitational.
Scott Stanton ran a provisional national qualifying time in capturing the 110 high
hurdles.
Eric Holmes took first in the shot put.
