Clayton earns national academic honor
July 8, 2010
Monmouth
College golfer Rodney Clayton (Plano, Ill./Plano) was one of
just 22 NCAA Division III golfers nationwide to be named Cleveland
Golf/Srixon All-American scholars.
To be eligible for
the honor, individuals must be juniors or seniors and compete in at
least two full years of golf at the college level. In addition,
Division III golfers must have a stroke-average under 79. They must
also participate in 70 percent of their team’s competitive rounds or
compete in the NCAA Championships, and maintain a minimum cumulative
grade-point average of 3.2. The recipient must also be of high moral
character and be in good standing at his college or university.
Clayton, a
senior-to-be physics major at Monmouth, averaged just under 78
strokes per round last season and carries a career average of 78.5.
He won the Midwest Conference individual championship as Monmouth
won their second league team title the first weekend in May and
competed in his second straight national tournament as a member of
the Fighting Scots later that month. He finished in the top 10 in
five of the Scots’ 12 contests during the 2009-10 season and will be
one of just two seniors on Monmouth’s squad this fall.

MWC PERFORMER OF THE WEEK
Harvey close to finals, but
falls in sudden death playoff
May 13, 2010
Turns out that
eagle that Monmouth’s Ryan Harvey made on Tuesday at the 2010
NCAA Men’s Division III National Golf Championship in Hershey, Pa.,
came in handy.
Unfortunately, it
wasn’t enough to make up the five strokes that the Fighting Scots
needed to advance as a team to the final two rounds. But it did give
Harvey an opportunity to advance individually, at least for two more
holes.
Harvey followed up his
first-day 76 with another 76 at the much more challenging East
Course at the Hershey Country Club. His two-day score of 152 tied
him with Bridgewater’s Travis Gahman for fifth place among
individuals who were not members of advancing teams.

MWC PERFORMER OF THE WEEK
Scots take team title, Clayton
edges Starkey for individual crown
May 1, 2010
A good weekend for the Monmouth College men’s golf team who
won both the team and individual titles at the Midwest Conference
championship at Aldeen Golf Course in Rockford.
The Fighting Scots entered the final round Saturday with a 22
stroke advantage and won by nearly that same margin. After carding a
320-303 for the first two rounds, the Scots closed the 54-hole
tournament with a 311 for a 934 total to win by 21 strokes over
Carroll. The team title is the third in the last four years for
Monmouth and gives coach Dave Ragone his fifth MWC crown
making him the winningest golf coach in Fighting Scots’ history in
terms of conference championships.
It was an all-Monmouth affair for the individual crown. Junior Rodney Clayton
and senior
Ted Starkey staged a Nicklaus
vs. Palmer type battle with Clayton leading after Day 1 and Starkey
in the lead after Day 2. Clayton came from three strokes back
Saturday to take the title by a single stroke, giving the Scots a
1-2 finish. Clayton’s 73 on the final round made the difference. He
carded a 78-77-73-228 to edge Starkey’s 79-73-77-229.

MWC PERFORMER OF THE WEEK
Kemerling rolls his way to
Performer of the Week
April 14, 2010
Freshman Brandon Kemerling (Peoria, Ill./Richwoods) made the
most of his opportunity and was named the Midwest Conference
Performer of the Week in men’s golf.
Kemerling – a late addition to the Fighting Scots entries at last
weekend’s 36-hole Augustana Invitational – beat 77 other golfers to take
the tournament title. Kemerling had his “A” game on, firing an opening
round 72 and following that with a final round 67 for a 139 total to tie
for medalist honors. He then bested his playoff opponent with a birdie
on the first playoff hole to win the sudden-death playoff.
Playing on Monmouth’s “B” team for the tournament, the freshman physic
major’s 67 is the third-lowest 18-hole score in Fighting Scots’ history
and his 139 36-hole total is second on the Scots’ all-time list. His
score helped the “B” squad to a 311-314-625 to finish eighth in the 14
team field.
McNamara claims first MWC Performer of the Week
March 31, 2010
Sophomore Sean McNamara (Monmouth,
Ill./Monmouth-Roseville) fired the best rounds of his collegiate
career and earned the season’s first Midwest Conference Performer of
the Week award.
McNamara got his season off on the right foot,
winning the 36-hole Prairie Fire Classic last weekend. McNamara led
from start to finish, firing a 74-76-150 to win by one stroke. The
36-hole score ranks among the top six all-time at Monmouth. His
effort led the Fighting Scots to a come-from-behind win in the
16-team tournament. The Scots opened with a 307 to trail after the
first round, but carded a final round 302 to win by seven strokes.
Their 609 total is the fifth best 36-hole score in team history.

FIGHTING SCOTS
TEAM INFORMATION |
TEAM HISTORY
For the past several decades, golf has been a major pastime in the Monmouth
community. Monmouth College's inaugural golf season began in the spring of 1938 and was
continued until 1982.
After a 10 year hiatus, the program was resurrected for one season
in 1992. Although the Scots have been absent from the MWC golf scene, the college's name
still adorns the conference record books, winning league titles in 1940, 1975 and 5
straight from 1977-81. Their most recent titles came in 2002, 2004, 2007
and 2009. The Scots' 2007 title earned them their first NCAA
Tournament appearance since 1981 and the 2009 team finished 23rd at
the NCAA Tournament.
HOME COURSE
Monmouth plays their home matches on the demanding, 6,362-yard, par-71 Gibson
Woods Golf Course. The course is aptly named with rolling fairways guarded by
old-growth trees and strategically-placed bunkers. The course is the home to the
Monmouth-Roseville High School golf team which has produced eight state team titles and six
individual state champs.
