Tanney named nation's top Division III player
Release Date:
Jan. 14, 2010
Putting up some of the best quarterback statistics in all of
Division III has earned Monmouth College’s Alex Tanney
(Normal, Ill./Lexington) the Melberger Award, given annually since
1993 to the nation’s top Division III player.
Sponsored by Diversified Information Technologies, the Melberger
Award is selected by a nationwide panel based solely on a player’s
performance on the field. In other words – “The best player,
period.” The award also brings with it a $2,500 check for the
college’s general scholarship fund.
“It’s nice to learn the panel selected me as the best player in
the nation,” said Tanney, a month after narrowly missing the
Gagliardi Trophy which combines athletics, academics and community
service. “I have to credit all the great players around me who make
my job easy. Coach Bell and his staff have really helped me develop
my skills, but like any award, it’s really a reflection of the
success of our team. I was also extremely pleased to hear that the
award includes a donation to the college’s general scholarship
fund.”
D3football.com names Tanney All-American
December 21, 2009
Monmouth College quarterback Alex Tanney (Normal,
Ill./Lexington) capped a stellar year with an All-American award
from D3football.com last weekend.
Tanney was named to the All-American second team by the Division
III football Web site. The 6-foot-4 signal-caller had earlier this
season been named the West Region winner in the competition for the
Gagliardi Trophy, given to the nation’s top player. Last summer, he
was named a preseason All-American by Consensus Draft Services,
Lindy’s Sports Magazine and D3football.com.
A junior business major, Tanney was all business on the field,
where he has thrown for a school-record 10,158 yards and 118
touchdown passes over his three-year career. He led Division III
this season with 3,856 passing yards and his 350.55 passing yards
and 348.73 total yards per game rank him fourth in both categories.
He had a 132.10 pass efficiency rating with just 20 interceptions.
Tanney joins Anthony Goranson as Fighting Scots
All-Americans for 2009. Goranson, a defensive end, was named an
All-American last week by the American Football Coaches Association.
Goranson named All-American by national coaches
association
December 15, 2009
The American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) has named Monmouth
College defensive end Anthony Goranson (Bartlett,
Ill./Belvidere) to their Division III All-American team.
Goranson, a senior, was the only player from the Midwest
Conference named to the 25-man squad. AFCA has named All-American
teams since 1945 and currently selects the nation’s top players in
five divisions.
The 6-foot-5, 255-pound Goranson led the Scots in two defensive
categories, tackles for loss (21) and sacks (7.5). He also earned
the conference’s Defensive Player of the Year honor and was named
all-conference for the fourth time. He is the Scots’ all-time leader
in tackles for loss (76.5) and is second all-time for sacks (32.5).
Goranson holds the distinction of playing on all three of Monmouth’s
NCAA playoff teams.
“Anthony has had a tremendous impact on
our success at Monmouth College,” said head coach Steve Bell. “It
is only fitting that he ends his career as an All-American. I told
him throughout the recruiting process that he had the ability to
achieve All-American status if he wanted it.”
Goranson was also named a preseason All-American this spring by
Consensus Draft Services, and earned an All-West Region postseason
selection from D3football.com., which will announce its All-American
teams this weekend.
Tanney edged in voting for Gagliardi Trophy
December 15, 2009
Quarterback Alex Tanney (Normal, Ill./Lexington) gave it his
best shot, but this year’s Gagliardi Trophy – the nation’s top
Division III award – went to an offensive lineman instead.
Tanney – the only junior in the field of four finalists – was
edged in the voting by the Gagliardi Trophy committee by Augustana
(Ill.) offensive lineman Blake Westemeyer. A four year starter at
tackle, Westemeyer is the first offensive lineman to receive the
award in its 16 year history.
Monmouth’s Tanney can appreciate the talent of an offensive
lineman. The 6-4, 200 pound signal-caller took snaps this season
behind a line that featured four all-conference players – Josh
Kotecki, Dan Schwindehammer, Seth Hill and Nick Hoffman. Kotecki and
Schwindenhammer – along with Tanney – were also named preseason
All-Americans.
Tanney, who holds the Monmouth career passing record of 10,158
yards and led Division III with 3,856 passing yards, was also
appreciative of originally making the field of the top 10 finalists,
nine of which were seniors. Being named to the final four was a
bonus.
“Being compared with the top seniors in
the country and making the top 10 was rewarding,” said Tanney.
“Making the final four was icing on the cake. It’s really a
great honor to be recognized by the entire country and is great for
our program.”
The Scots’ program has rolled to a 28-5
record in Tanney’s three seasons at quarterback. Since 2004 with a
Tanney at quarterback (older brother Mitch was a Gagliardi top 10
finalist in 2005 and a two-year starter at QB) the Scots have had
two Gagliardi top 10 finalists and won three conference titles.
That’s the highest concentration of league crowns since the Fighting
Scots won conference titles in 1931, ’32 and ’34.
“Making it to the final four in the
voting is really a reflection of the success of the team as a
whole,” said Tanney.
Tanney in final four for Gagliardi
Trophy
December 10, 2009
Monmouth
College quarterback Alex Tanney (Normal, Ill./Lexington) is in
rarified air after being named one of four finalists today for the
prestigious Gagliardi Trophy.
Tanney
was selected as the West Region candidate for the “D3 Heisman” in a poll
of the 35 committee members and a fan vote. He is joined by East Region
winner John Peters, a linebacker from Union College (New York); North
representative, offensive tackle Blaine Westemeyer of Augustana College;
and South winner Gerry Dick, a quarterback from DePauw University.
Tanney is the lone junior to make the final four.
The
Scots’ signal caller leads Division III quarterbacks this year with
3,856 yards, while his 350.55 passing yards and 348.73 total yards per
game rank him fourth in both categories. His 44 passing TDs and one
rushing score make him responsible for more than 24 points per game,
ranking him second in the division. He has tied or broken nine school
records and four times this season passed for more than 400 yards. The
junior sports a 28-5 career record as Monmouth’s quarterback.
Off the
field, Tanney volunteers with groups such as Special Olympics and the
Alzheimer’s Walk. A business major, he is a two-time academic
all-conference selection.
Sponsored by Jostens and the J-Club of Saint John’s University, the
Gagliardi Trophy recognizes excellence in athletics, academics and
community service. The national winner will be announced on Dec. 15, and
the recipient will be presented with the trophy on Dec. 17 at the Salem
Civic Center in Salem, Va., as part of the festivities leading up to the
Division III National Championship Game in Salem on Dec. 19.

with Evan Haffner, who earned all-region selections in 2005
and 2006.
Two senior offensive linemen were named to the third team
unit.
Right guard Josh Kotecki (Peru, Ill./LaSalle-Peru) and left
tackle Dan Schwindenhammer (Peoria, Ill./Notre Dame) each
earned their second consecutive all-region honor. The Scots
generated nearly 528 yards of total offense per game, ranking them
second in Division III. Scoring more than 45 points per game ranks
them third in that category. Monmouth also converted 52 percent of
their third downs.
Senior defensive end Anthony Goranson (Bartlett,
Ill./Belvidere) was selected to the defensive all-region team for
the second time. A third teamer, Goranson led the Scots with 21
tackles for loss and 7.5 sacks. He finished his career with 32.5
sacks, second all-time among Monmouth defenders. His 56 tackles this
season included 34 solos.
The D3football.com All-West Region teams were selected from more
than 150 nominations and voted on by the region’s sports information
directors and D3football.com staff. The Web site’s All-American team
will be announced on Dec. 19 prior to the Division III national
championship game in Salem, Va.

FOOTBALL LINKS
Monmouth
College's first official football game was played in 1888 against Knox College. Monmouth was
crowned "college champions of Illinois" in 1905 and repeated in 1906 when the team recorded
its first perfect season at 8-0.
Hall of Famer Francis "Jug" Earp, who would go on to play 11
seasons of professional football with the Green Bay Packers, dominated the Fighting Scot
offensive line in the early 1920s and the Warren Taylor-Keith Molesworth passing combination
of the mid-'20s was one of the finest the college has ever produced. Molesworth would later
play eight NFL seasons with the Chicago Bears.
Robert
"Bobby" Woll, one of the best all-around athletes ever to wear a Monmouth jersey and the only
person to have his football number (29) retired at the college, was the star during the
1931-33 seasons.
In 1981 the new football field was dedicated and named Bobby Woll Athletic
Field in honor of Woll's years of competition and coaching service at Monmouth. Following his
death in August of 1999, the football field was rededicated Bobby Woll Memorial Field.
The 1952 and 1953 squads featured the
rushing prowess of All-American tailback Ray Brooks.
The late '60s through the mid '70s saw
some of the most prolific
teams in school history featuring two of the best running backs to ever play at Monmouth in
Charlie Corle (1967-69) and Ron Baker (1972-75), who ended his career as the team's all-time
leading rusher with 3,642 yards.
The 1972 squad posted the best record of any Monmouth team to
that season,
winning the MCAC championship with a perfect 9-0 record.
Following a heartbreaking 3-0 road loss to
Coe in the infamous 1986 "Mud Bowl", the Scots won a school-record 26 consecutive regular
season games between 1986 and 1989.
The Scots advanced to the MCAC league championship game in
1987 and enjoyed a three-year run as South Division champions. Mark Reed, who quarterbacked
the 1987 divisional champion team, established an NCAA Division III national record that year
with 17 rushing touchdowns. Monmouth's first overtime game was ironically against archrival
Knox. The Scots won a thrilling 13-7 victory over their rivals in a 1991 snowstorm.
In 2005 the Scots
finished the regular season with a 10-0 mark and in doing so
captured their first conference title since 1976 and advanced to the
NCAA Playoffs for the first time in school history.
