1998 - 1999 Men's Basketball -- Results and Game Summaries
11/28/98 vs. Maryville [Pizza Hut
Classic] 83-96 (0-1)
Monmouth dropped its home season opener to Maryville University as
the Saints pulled away late in the game. After falling behind 40-27, the Scots made a late
first-half run to pull within six points, thanks in large part to three consecutive
three-point shots from the perimeter by freshman guard Steve Glasgow. Maryville led 44-36 at
the break and Monmouth chipped away at the Saints lead through the early stages of the second
half, eventually pulling even at 64-64 with 11:10 on the clock. The score was tied again at
76-76 with seven minutes left and the Scots enjoyed their last lead at 78-76 on a Glasgow
layup. Maryville took control from there, outscoring the Scots 20-5 in the closing minutes.
Junior Kent Froebe led Monmouth with 20 points and 7 rebounds. Glasgow scored 17 points on the
strength of five three-pointers and seniors Eric Matthews and Jeremy Bruce each added 12.
11/29/98 vs. Culver-Stockton [Pizza Hut Classic] 72-63 (1-1)
Monmouth managed a split of the weekend doubleheader, defeating NAIA
opponent Culver-Stockton by nine points. It looked like a blowout early as Monmouth got off to
a fast start, posting a 23-11 lead after the first ten minutes. Culver got on track and closed
to within three points at the half (33-30) and actually took the lead at 45-44 with 14 minutes
left in the second period. Monmouth held tough with five freshman players on the floor for the
next five minutes and kept the game close. Junior Kent Froebe returned off the bench to score
seven straight points as Monmouth went on a 10-0 scoring run, keeping Culver-Stockton
scoreless for over five minutes, to take a 66-57 lead. A three-point shot by the Wildcats made
it 68-63 with 15 seconds remaining but senior Jeremy Bruce iced the victory with two free
throws and the Scots added a layup at the buzzer for the final margin. Froebe and Bruce shared
scoring honors with 14 points each. Eric Matthews scored 11 points and grabbed a team-high 8
rebounds.
12/02/98 at Lake Forest 79-74 (2-1, 1-0)
Monmouth traveled to Lake Forest and won a critical early-season
conference game on the road, escaping with a five-point victory. The Foresters, who finished
second in the MWC South Division last year behind Monmouth, were paced by Joe Wysocki's 37
points. The Fighting Scots received an excellent all-around effort from senior Eric Matthews,
who scored a team-high 24 points (9-of-12 shooting) and grabbed 9 rebounds. Junior Kent Froebe
added 15 points and freshman guard Greg Kloepping, on the strength of three long-range
three-pointers, chipped in 13 points. Monmouth held a five-point cushion (42-37) at halftime
and kept their advantage through the second half.
12/05/98 vs. Knox 80-71 (3-1, 2-0)
Monmouth jumped to the top of the MWC standings with their second
conference victory in as many games. The Scots defeated their arch-rival, the Knox Prairie
Fire, at Glennie Gymnasium in front of a loud and boisterous home crowd for their third
straight win. Monmouth scored 12 of the first 14 points of the game to grab the early momentum
as senior Eric Matthews, who would finish with 16 points in only 24 minutes, poured in 10 of
the Scots' first 12. The Scots continued to build on an eight-point halftime advantage (38-30)
through the second half, leading by as many as 16 points with six minutes remaining. The Fire
rallied furiously to cut the lead to only five with under two minutes remaining but Monmouth
converted 10 of 12 free throws in the final 1:30 to secure the victory. It marked the 99th win
in men's basketball for Monmouth in the long rivalry series with Knox. Kent Froebe led five
Scots in double figures with 17 points and had a team-high 12 rebounds. In addition to
Matthews, Jeremy Bruce (13), Steve Glasgow (12) and Jeff Stenoish (10) also scored ten or more
points. Monmouth also controlled the boards, outrebounding the Fire 49-29.
12/08/98 at Truman State 74-97 (3-2)
Monmouth lost a non-conference game on the road at Division II
Truman State University to snap a three-game winning streak. The Fighting Scots received fine
performances from their freshman reserves, who combined to score 58 of the team's 74 total
points. The Monmouth starters could not generate any offense against the Bulldogs, who went to
8-0 with the win. Truman led 47-35 at the break and built a commanding lead in the early
minutes of the second period before the freshman players led a brief comeback. Guard Steve
Glasgow led all Monmouth players with a season-high 18 points and classmates Greg Kloepping
and Mike Roehm added 13 and 10 points, respectively.
12/10/98 at MacMurray 63-82 (3-3)
Monmouth dropped a non-conference game on the road in Jacksonville,
losing to MacMurray in a poor overall effort. The Fighting Scots trailed by 18 (41-23) at
halftime and could never mount a serious threat in the second period to cut into the
Highlander lead. Freshmen Chad Schlosser and Jeff Stenoish scored 11 and 10 points,
respectively, and were the only MC players to hit double digits. Monmouth was only 4-of-16 in
three-point attempts and shot 31% from the floor for the game.
12/12/98 at Central Missouri State 65-107 (3-4)
The Scots' losing streak stretched to three games as Monmouth
traveled to Warrenburg, Missouri and lost to the CMSU Mules, a Division II opponent whom the
Scots have never beaten in 12 tries. Central Missouri outscored Monmouth 62-32 in the first 20
minutes to seal the win early against a starting lineup which included three freshmen. Jeff
Stenoish responded with a team-high 13 points and freshman Greg Kloepping hit four three-point
shots off the bench to add 12. Eric Matthews scored six points and grabbed a team-leading six
rebounds. Six Central Missouri players hit for double digits as the Mules improved to 5-2
overall.
01/08/99 vs. Grinnell 140-107 (4-4, 3-0)
01/09/99 vs. Lake Forest 68-56 (5-4, 4-0)
The Monmouth men’s basketball team blasted out
of the holiday vacation in record-setting fashion last weekend, winning both ends of a crucial
Midwest Conference doubleheader at Glennie Gymnasium. Monmouth now sports a perfect 4-0 MWC
league record after defeating Grinnell and Lake Forest this past weekend. The 140 points
against Grinnell were the most ever scored in a single game by Monmouth, which also
established a first-half scoring mark with 81 points. The team also broke the single-game
record for field-goal percentage, converting 58 of 68 shots for an amazing 85% clip. Senior
guard Trevor Hiel scored a team-high 33 points, including 15 of 16 from the floor. Freshman
Steve Glasgow scored a season-high 22 points and senior Eric Matthews added 20 as seven
Monmouth players scored in double figures. The 140 points came with only one made three-point
goal as Monmouth attempted just two shots beyond the arc. Ironically the lone three-pointer
was the shot which broke the old record of 136 points, set in 1991 also against Grinnell.
Glasgow had the honor of making the record-breaking shot, hitting a jumper from the top of the
key with 1:57 left on the clock. Monmouth had hit the 100-point barrier on a dunk by junior
Kyle Duane with just six minutes gone in the second half.
Monmouth was able to adjust to a completely different style of play against Lake Forest on
Saturday, winning by a 68-56 score. The Foresters played a slow, methodical tempo and actually
led at the half 28-27. After the teams traded leads several time in the second 20 minutes, the
score was tied at 41-41 with 9:25 remaining. Monmouth went on a 20-5 run over the next seven
minutes to pull away for the win, led by the efforts of junior Kent Froebe who scored 12 of
his game-high 18 points in that span. Glasgow added 13 points for the Scots, who also held a
44-37 rebounding advantage over Lake Forest.
01/13/99 vs. Aurora 78-87 (5-5)
The Scots had trouble with another non-conference opponent, dropping
a nine-point decision at home to Aurora University. Monmouth struggled all night and could not
find any consistency at either end of the court in losing their fifth non-conference game of
the season. The Spartans forged a ten-point lead midway through the first half and enjoyed a
46-39 halftime advantage. Aurora made five more three-pointers and six more free throws for
the game than Monmouth and was able to survive several short MC rallies in the second half.
Freshman Greg Kloepping led all Monmouth scorers with 17 points and Kent Froebe added 16 and a
team-high 7 rebounds.
01/15/99 at Ripon 68-86 (5-6, 4-1)
01/16/99 at St. Norbert 69-88 (5-7, 4-2)
Monmouth lost its first two Midwest Conference
men’s basketball games of the season and dropped its third straight overall on a weekend road
trip to Wisconsin. Against the defending league champion Ripon Red Hawks, Monmouth trailed
38-32 at the half and could not close the gap in the second period. Jeremy Bruce (17) and Greg
Kloepping (12) were the only Scots in double figures for Monmouth, which was without the
services of senior forward Eric Matthews after an ankle injury against Aurora. The Scots
attempted 23 three-point shots but made only 7 and shot 43% from the floor for the game.
Monmouth led 16-13 early at St. Norbert on Saturday afternoon but then went 11:30 without a
field goal and 6:20 without scoring a point as the Green Knights went on a 27-9 run to post a
4-25 halftime lead. The Fighting Scots could not recover from the deficit in the second half
and trailed by as many as 22 points at one time. Four players hit for ten or more points,
paced by junior Kent Froebe (18) and senior Trevor Hiel (15). Froebe also pulled down a
team-high 8 rebounds.
01/22/99 vs. Carroll 103-74 (6-7, 5-2)
01/23/99 vs. Lawrence 66-61 (7-7, 6-2)
The Monmouth men’s basketball team rebounded from
last weekend's defeats to post two crucial MWC league wins at home. The Fighting Scots used a
school-record 47 free throws and 65 second-half points to blow away Carroll on Friday night
and then outlasted a stubborn Lawrence team by five points on Saturday.
In the first game Carroll was hit with four technical fouls in the second half and Monmouth
took advantage to gradually expand on an 11-point halftime lead. The Scots converted 47 of 51
foul shots (a single-game record 92.2%) for the game with freshman guard Steve Glasgow making
good on 13 of 14 and scoring a career-high 33 points.
Lawrence used a rough and physical style to slow the tempo down in Saturday's afternoon game
but Monmouth was able to adjust. The Scots enjoyed a seven-point cushion at the break and led
by as many as 14 points midway through the second half. The Vikings cut the lead to seven with
three minutes remaining but Monmouth made 12 of 15 free throws in the final 5 minutes to seal
the victory. Glasgow led all Monmouth players with 17 points and Eric Matthews scored 10.
01/26/99 at Illinois 78-90 (7-8, 6-3)
The Scots suffered a rare defeat at the hands of Illinois College on
the road in Jacksonville, losing to IC for only the second time in 14 seasons. The Blueboys
stormed to a 43-34 halftime advantage but a 16-6 run to start the second half gave Monmouth a
brief 50-49 lead. Illinois regained its composure and the lead and never trailed the rest of
the game. Four IC players hit for double digits while three Monmouth players scored 16 or
more. Freshmen guards Steve Glasgow and Greg Kloepping shared team-high honors with 19 points
and junior Kent Froebe added 16 for the Scots.
01/29/99 at Beloit 105-76 (8-8, 7-3)
01/30/99 at Carroll 66-71 (8-9, 7-4)
The Monmouth men’s basketball team split a
weekend doubleheader in Wisconsin but stayed in contention for a postseason tournament berth.
Freshman Steve Glasgow, last week's MWC Player of the Week, scored 30 points in the romp at
Beloit on Friday, including 5 three-point shots. Monmouth scored 54 points in the first half
and enjoyed a 13-point lead at the break. Kent Froebe added 22 for the Scots, who also
received 12 points each from Jeremy Bruce and Jeff Stenoish. It was the third time this season
Monmouth had hit the 100-point barrier and the Scots have won all three.
Carroll got off to a fast start on Saturday and put Monmouth in a 36-24 hole at intermission
as the Scots hit only 36% from the floor in the first half. MC rallied in the second period
but fell short by five. Glasgow and Eric Matthews paced Monmouth with 18 points apiece and
Stenoish added 17 off the bench.
02/05/99 vs. St. Norbert 88-77 (9-9, 8-4)
02/06/99 vs. Ripon 73-87 (9-10, 8-5)
Monmouth split at home to go to 8-5 in Midwest
Conference play as the Fighting Scots avenged an earlier loss at St. Norbert but could stop
the defending league champion Ripon Red Hawks. It took almost 32 minutes but Monmouth finally
forged a lead against the Green Knights on Friday, going ahead with just under nine minutes
remaining in the second half. Once ahead the Scots never trailed again, riding a streak of hot
three-point shooting and clutch free throws to seal the victory. Freshman Steve Glasgow, who
racked up a team-high 20 points, hit two decisive threes in the final minutes as did Jeremy
Bruce (14 points) and Greg Kloepping (10). Eric Matthews and Jeff Stenoish also added 10
points each as the Fighting Scots, down by four at the break, lived up to their nickname and
kept chipping away at the Norbert lead. The victory avenged a 19-point loss two weeks ago in
DePere.
Monmouth had the lead at halftime on Saturday but the second 20 minutes proved to be too much
Ripon as the Red Hawks shot 52% from the floor and limited Monmouth to only 27 second-half
points with a stifling defensive effort. The Scots attempted only four free throws in the
second half while Ripon was making 15 of 20 foul shots. Stenoish led three players in double
figures with 16 points. Kent Froebe added 15 and Matthews scored 14.
02/10/99 at Grinnell 115-125 (9-11, 8-6)
The Monmouth men’s basketball team lost on the road
at Grinnell, dealing their postseason hopes a serious but not fatal blow. In fourth place with
two league games remaining, the Fighting Scots need to win both (Illinois at home on Wednesday
and Knox in Galesburg next Saturday) to clinch a spot in the four-team postseason conference
tournament. Monmouth matched Grinnell's frenetic pace in the first half, knotting the score at
58-58 by halftime on 75% shooting (25-of-33). The Scots fell off in the second 20 minutes,
hitting only 55% and giving the Pioneers a wealth of opportunities from the free-throw line.
Grinnell converted 37 of 52 foul shots and made 16 three-point attempts to secure the victory.
Six Fighting Scot players scored in double figures but it wasn't enough to overcome the
Pioneers' league-leading offensive attack. Kent Froebe scored 26 points to lead Monmouth,
which also received solid games from Jeff Stenoish (21 points, 11 rebounds) and Trevor Hiel
(17 points, 10 rebounds).
02/17/99 vs. Illinois 88-79 (10-11, 9-6)
The Fighting Scots avenged a mid-season loss to Illinois College,
handing the Blueboys a nine-point loss at Monmouth to help their cause to get to the MWC
postseason tournament. Monmouth still needs a win at Knox next weekend to qualify for the
league championships. The Scots jumped out to an early lead but IC hung tough and the first
half saw six lead changes and five ties, Monmouth taking a 50-44 lead into the locker room.
Monmouth never trailed the entire second half, leading by as many as nine and by as few as one
point. Clutch three-point shooting and solid defense secured the victory as five MC players
hit for double figures, led by freshman Greg Kloepping's 17 points. Kent Froebe hit for 14 and
Steve Glasgow and Trevor Hiel added 13 apiece.
02/20/99 at Knox 81-66 (11-11, 10-6)
Monmouth secured its 16th MWC postseason tournament berth in the
last 20 seasons and earned its 100th series victory over their arch-rival Knox on Saturday in
Galesburg. The Scots ended the league schedule at 10-6 and earned the #4 seed for this
weekend's MWC tournament by beating the Prairie Fire for the second time this season. Monmouth
now holds a 100-77 lead in the series between the two schools. Three seniors played their
final regular-season game in a Monmouth uniform and all contributed the victory. Jeremy Bruce
scored 13 points, including a perfect 8-of-8 effort from the free-throw line, Trevor Hiel
added 10 points and Eric Matthews chipped in 8 points and grabbed a team-high 13 rebounds.
Steve Glasgow led all scorers with 26 points and hit on five three-point shots to spark the
team in the second half. Monmouth held a slim one-point halftime lead (35-34) and saw the Fire
take an eight-point lead with ten minutes to go. However the Scots turned on the defensive
pressure, forcing several poor shots and critical turnovers, and then scored 16 consecutive
points to pull away late in the game. Monmouth will travel to Ripon, WI this weekend for the
MWC tournament.
02/26/99 vs. Ripon (at MWC Tournament) 62-108 (11-12)
Monmouth ended its season with a disheartening semifinal-round loss
to Ripon in the MWC Conference Tournament. It was the third time that the Red Hawks had beaten
Monmouth this year and was the Scots' sixth consecutive semifinal loss in tournament play.
Ripon put on a show in the first half with a stifling defensive effort, allowing only seven
field goals by Monmouth on 33% shooting, while scoring 64 points (27-of-36) and hitting on 6
of 7 three-point attempts. Ripon held a commanding 64-26 lead at the break and increased their
advantage throughout the second period. Freshman Jeff Stenoish (13) and senior Jeremy Bruce
(11) were the only Fighting Scots to score in double figures as MC shot only 31% for the game
and was 3-of-21 from three-point territory. The Ripon defense forced 25 turnovers and
outrebounded Monmouth by a 38-24 margin. Ripon then went on to defeat St. Norbert on Saturday
for their second consecutive MWC title and will appear in the NCAA Division III National
Tournament.
