May 9, 2009 vs. St. Norbert College at DePere, Wis.
Midwest Conference Championships - Elimination Game
St. Norbert 7, Monmouth 5 (16-17)
St. Norbert scored two late runs to edge Monmouth 7-5 and knock the
Fighting Scots out of the Midwest Conference playoffs. The loss offset a
solid pitching performance from senior Drew Johnson and an
offensive explosion from freshman Ross Donnan. After two first
inning runs and a pair of Scots' errors Johnson settled in striking out
five in his career finale. Donnan gave Johnson as much support as he
could, slugging a pair of homers and driving in four runs. His sixth
inning three-run round tripper tied the game at 5-5. The Green Knights'
defense stiffened after Donnan's last homer and allowed just one Scot to
reach base the rest of the way. St. Norbert regained the lead with a
pair of hits and one run in the eighth. The Knights added an insurance
run in the ninth and retired Monmouth in order in the bottom of the
frame.
May 8, 2009 vs. Grinnell College at DePere, Wis.
Midwest Conference Championships - Elimination Game
Monmouth 12 (16-16), Grinnell 2
You're not seeing things. Monmouth and Grinnell played for the sixth
time in less than a week. Caleb Ruyle drove in five runs and
Robbie Hinkle scattered 11 hits as the Scots handled the Pioneers
12-2, eliminating Grinnell from the MWC Championships. Monmouth jumped
on Grinnell for six runs - two earned - in the sixth and added four more
two innings later to ice the game. Ruyle's double - his first of three
hits in the game - drove in three runs in the big inning and Chad
Kamm plated two more with a double of his own in the inning. Ross
Donnan supplied the big blow in the sixth, driving in Kamm and
Terry Davis. The Scots meet St. Norbert at 10:00 a.m. Saturday for
the right to meet Beloit in the title round.
May 8, 2009 vs. Beloit College at DePere, Wis.
Midwest Conference Championships - 1st Rd.
Beloit 7, Monmouth 6 (15-16)
If the Scots are to claim their 16th conference title, they'll have
to do it the hard way after dropping the opening game of the Midwest
Conference Championships to Beloit 7-6. The Buccaneers put their leadoff
men on in the seventh and eighth and scored them both to overtake a 6-5
Scots' lead down the stretch. Monmouth put four of their first five
batters on to start the game and scored all four, but their bats fell
silent after that. Ross Donnan picked up two of his game-high
three RBIs in the first inning. Beloit stormed back with a four-run
fourth to take a 5-4 lead, but Billy Herrin's hit to right drove
in Caleb Ruyle with the tying run in the bottom of the inning.
Donnan's second hit of the day in the fifth plated Chaz Baggio
with the go-ahead run before the Bucs slammed the door. Zach Myers,
on in relief of starter Matt Bourne suffered the loss. Drew
Johnson worked the final 1 2/3 to close out the game.
May 4, 2009 vs. Grinnell College at Grinnell,
Iowa
South Division Championship
Monmouth 15 (15-15, 8-4), Grinnell 4
For a while, it looked like Monmouth and Grinnell might battle to
yet another extra inning game. A day after the teams finished a
19-inning marathon, the Scots and Pioneers were locked in a 3-3 battle
through the first two innings to determine the South Division champion.
The Pioneers broke the tie with a run in the third, but it was all Scots
after that, winning 15-4. Monmouth posted three in the top of the fourth
and two more in the fifth. The Scots delivered the knockout punch in the
sixth, plating seven runs and blanking Grinnell over the next two
innings to win via the mercy rule. Chris Wolcott relieved
Chris Albanese to get the win, working 4.1 innings and surrendering
just two hits. The middle part of Monmouth's order did plenty of damage
as Chad Kamm, Terry Davis and Kevin Sashko each
picked up four hits and drove in a combined 11 runs.
May 3, 2009 vs. Grinnell College at Grinnell,
Iowa
Game 1 - Grinnell 8, Monmouth 7
Game 2 - Monmouth 10 (14-15, 8-4), Grinnell 7
The Scots won with their backs to the wall in Grinnell. After
dropping the suspended game and falling 8-7 in Game 1 of the regularly
scheduled double-header, Monmouth came out smoking in a 10-7 win in Game
2 to tie the Pioneers for the South Division title - meaning Monday at
noon, the two teams will play each other for the fifth time in three
days. Monmouth scored in each of the first five innings in the opener
and road the arm of Brian Chandler to a 7-6 lead heading into the
bottom of the seventh. A two-run homer gave the Pioneers the lead and
eventually the win, taking a one-game lead over the Scots in the
standings. Monmouth scored in bunches and got 6.2 strong innings from
Matt Tye in the critical nightcap. A four-run first got the Scots
going and they added two more in the fifth and one in the sixth before
Grinnell closed the gap to 7-5 with another two-run homer in the sixth.
Nick Basala didn't go yard, but his based loaded double in the
seventh cleared the bases and gave the Scots their margin of victory.
May 2, 2009 vs. Grinnell College at
Monmouth, Ill.
Game 1 - Monmouth 10, Grinnell 0
Game 2 - Grinnell 5, Monmouth 3 (13-14, 7-3)
Matt Bourne was masterful in Game 1 as the Scots downed Grinnell
10-0 in a mercy rule-shortened game. Bourne allowed just two hits and
Billy Herrin drove in the game-ending run with a base hit in the
seventh - his third hit of the game. Chad Kamm and Terry Davis
also picked up three hits in the game. The teams made up for the
shortened game in the nightcap, playing 18 innings before darkness
halted the action. Trailing 3-0 in the bottom of the fifth, the Scots
scored three runs to pull to a 3-3 tie. Darkness after the 18th forced
the game to be suspended until Sunday. The Pioneers used sleeping in
their own beds to their advantage, plating two runs in the top of the
19th off Drew Johnson who had worked 4.2 innings the day before
as the Scots fell 5-3. Grinnell used six pitchers
in the game and stranded 22 base runners. Monmouth used three
pitchers and left 21 men stranded. The 43 combined runners left on is an

Game 1 - Robert Morris 8, Monmouth 7 (10)
Game 2 - Monmouth 7 (12-13, 6-2), Robert Morris 1
Monmouth and Robert Morris-Springfield split 19 innings of baseball.

back and tied the game with a four-run third and two more in the fourth.
Ross Donnan's two-out, two-run base hit in the third closed the
gap to 6-4. Monmouth then plated two unearned runs in the fourth for a
6-6 tie. Robert Morris countered with a solo run in the sixth, but
Kevin Sashko, who picked up three RBIs in the game, drew a bases
loaded walk in the next inning to tie the game at 7-7. A one-out triple
by the Eagles in the 10th set the stage for the winning run to score on
a sac fly. Matt Tye didn't allow a runner past second in his five
innings of work to shut down the Eagles in Game 2. Terry Davis
knocked in a pair of runs with a third inning double after Chad Kamm
drove in the game's first run with a base hit and the Scots were on
their way as Monmouth outhit Robert Morris in the twinbill 26-13.
April 25, 2009 vs. Knox College at Galesburg,
Ill.
Game 1 - Knox 7, Monmouth 1
Game 2 - Knox 7, Monmouth 3 (11-12, 6-2)
Arch rival Knox ended two Monmouth streaks with a 7-1, 7-3 sweep of
the Fighting Scots. The Scots' conference win streak ended at six with
the close of the Game 1 loss. Caleb Ruyle's solo homer in the
third was the only talley the Scots could muster. The Prairie Fire
plated four runs in the fourth off starting pitcher Matt Bourne
who had held them to one run a week earlier. Robbie Hinkle struck
out 10 batters in Game 2 but had his consecutive scoreless inning streak
ended in the fifth inning of the 7-3 loss. The sophomore passed Dan
Dunn's record of 29 consecutive scoreless innings, logging 31.1
straight innings without allowing a run. Three hits and a walk in the
fifth allowed Knox to trim their deficit to 3-2. They added a pair of
runs in the seventh and eighth to seal the win. Ross Donnan and
Tom Shaver ripped solo homers for the Scots in the third and fifth
innings, respectively.

inning. Sashko's solo homer followed a two-run double by Chad Kamm
and a two-run round tripper by Terry Davis. Chandler fanned
five and walked no one while scattering just three hits over the first
four innings of the game. Trailing 7-2 Millikin closed the gap in the
sixth with a three run homer. Drew Johnson - the Scots' fourth
pitcher of the night - worked the final 1.2 innings to earn the save.

Game 1 - Monmouth 9, MSOE 4
Game 2 - MSOE 12, Monmouth 3 (8-10, 4-0)
The Scots weren't at their best, but managed a split in Milwaukee
Monday, winning the opener against the Milwaukee School of Engineering
9-4, but falling in the nightcap 12-3. Brian Chandler pitched
seven strong innings in Game 1 scattering seven hits and striking out
six in his complete-game victory. Chad Kamm's leadoff double set
the stage for a three-run fifth that put the game out of reach. Kamm
came home on Terry Davis' base hit to make it 6-2. Mitch
Johnson then connected with a sac fly to score Davis, followed by
Nick Basala's run-scoring double and the Scots cruised to the win.
Davis and Johnson drove in three runs each in the opener. Drew
Johnson was the hard-luck loser in Game 2. The senior worked four
innings and gave up no earned runs, but was the victim of six of the Scots' seven errors in the
game and left the mound trailing 8-3. Billy
Herrin picked up three hits in the nightcap.
April 11, 2009 vs. Illinois College at
Monmouth, Ill.
Game 1 - Monmouth 6, Illinois College 2
Game 2 - Monmouth 2 (7-9, 4-0), Illinois College 0
Monmouth has a firm hold on first place in the Midwest Conference
South Division after a 6-2, 2-0 sweep of Illinois College. One week
after the Scots opened their season with a sweep of the Blueboys, they
did it again as Matt Bourne went the distance, scattering five
hits and striking out eight in the opener and Robbie Hinkle
fanned nine in a complete game win in Game 2. The Scots broke
loose for three runs in the sixth of the opener to break a 2-2 deadlock.
Tom Shaver got the Scots going with a leadoff double and three
singles later, the Scots had a 4-2 lead. Kevin Sashko drove in
Monmouth's final run in the inning with their fifth hit of the inning.
Shaver drove in the game's final run the next inning when his second
double of the day plated Jake Virgo. Billy Herrin, who had
three hits in Game 1, started the scoring in the nightcap. Terry
Davis' sac fly in the first inning scored Herrin for the only run
Hinkle would need. Shaver added an insurance run in the fifth, coming
home on an error. Chad Kamm and Herrin picked up four hits each
in the twinbill.
April 8, 2009 vs. Lawrence University at
Rockford, Ill.
Lawrence 4, Monmouth 2 (5-9, 2-0)

Monmouth fell to Lawrence 4-2 in a non-conference affair. The Scots
pushed two runs across in the top of the fourth when Kevin Sashko's
double scored Terry Davis. Brad Winkler then brought
Sashko home with a single to center. Starter Corey Gruber pitched
three scoreless innings for the Scots before Lawrence scored solo runs
in the fourth and fifth off reliever Brian Chandler to tie the
game. The Vikings took the lead in the seventh when Nick Pedretti's
triple scored Andy Frelich. Lawrence added an insurance run when
Pedretti scored on an errant throw on an attempted steal. Matt Tye
was saddled with the loss as the Scots used four pitchers in the game.

Scots stuck with their pregame plan to use their extensive bullpen.

gave up 12 hits in Game 1, but held IC to just four runs to earn his
third win of the year. Bourne handed the ball over to Brian Chandler
in the eighth. Chandler didn't allow a hit in picking up his first save
of the season. Terry Davis' two-run homer in the third got the
Scots on the board. Leading 4-0 in the top of the fifth, the Scots added
an unearned run in the inning and two more (both unearned) in the
seventh to hold off the Blueboys. Robbie Hinkle won a pitchers'
dual in Game 2, working out of jams in the first two innings before
setting down the next nine batters. After Brad Winkler led off
the second with a double to right, and Chaz Baggio's base
hit moved him to third, Tom Shaver drove in the game's only run
with a hit to center. The Blueboys threatened in the bottom of the ninth
putting a man on third with one out, but Hinkle retired the next two
batters on a strikeout and groundout to preserve the win. Caleb Ruyle
picked up four hits in the twinbill.
March 21, 2009 vs. Aurora University at
Aurora, Ill.
Game 1 - Aurora 5, Monmouth 0
Game 2 - Monmouth 10 (3-8), Aurora 7
A three-run fourth tainted Monmouth starter Matt Bourne's
eight-inning effort in a 5-0 loss to Aurora. Bourne scattered nine hits
and walked just three, but a leadoff error in the fourth followed by a
two-run homer gave the Spartans the only runs they would need. The Scots
threatened in the sixth and ninth, but couldn't plate any runs. Billy
Herrin and Caleb Ruyle, who picked up two hits each,
collected one-out singles, but a strikeout and a groundout ended the
scoring chances. Monmouth threatened again in the ninth when Terry
Davis opened the inning with his second hit of the game, a double,
and Kevin Sashko singled to right. The Spartans reduced the
threat with a double-play and closed the game with a strikeout. Robbie
Hinkle got plenty of support in a Game 2 win as the sophomore worked the
first five innings of the 10-7 win. Tied at 5-5 going into the sixth,
the Scots erupted for four runs. Willy Mason opened the inning with a
walk and stole second. He then scored on Tom Shaver's double to
give the Scots a 6-5 lead. After Shaver was forced out, Chad Kamm
delivered the big blow, a three-run homer. Sashko added a leadoff homer
in the seventh to an insurance run. Herrin and Kamm picked up two hits
each in the game.

win over St. Mary’s University (Minn.) in the opener. Bourne didn’t allow a runner
past second until a two-run homer in the fifth to give SMU a 2-1 lead.
Jake Virgo put Monmouth on the board and in the lead in the
second when his base hit plated Mitch Johnson. The Scots tied the
game in the sixth when Caleb Ruyle scored after a walk and a pair
of errors. Monmouth took the lead for good with a three-run top of the
seventh. Billy Herrin’s double scored Virgo before Terry Davis
drove in Herrin and Ruyle scored on a wild pitch. Monmouth couldn’t quite make a five-run third stand up in a 7-5 loss
to St. Mary’s in Game 2. Caleb Ruyle and Terry Davis each picked up
a pair of RBIs in the inning, but SMU tallied two runs each in the
fourth and fifth innings. They added an insurance run in the top of the

provided the fireworks with a three-run homer in the fifth to cut it to
11-6. Monmouth took a 12-11 lead in the bottom of the eighth parlaying

was tagged for four runs in the top of the ninth as the Scots suffered

Rockford 10, Monmouth 9 (11) (1-4)
Monmouth knocked Rockford's starter out
in the fourth inning, taking a 7-1 lead behind Scots starter
Robbie Hinkle.
Caleb Ruyle's two run triple in the top of the second
got the Scot going. Monmouth added three more in the third and led
Rockford 9-1 going into the seventh before the wheels came off. The
Regents tagged Hinkle for five runs in the inning on just three hits to
close the gap to 9-6. Corey Gruber worked the eighth
and kept Rockford at bay, setting them down in order. The ninth wasn't
as good to the Scots as Rockford drew a leadoff walk, then picked up a
double and a three run homer to knot the score at 9-9. Rockford won the
game in the 11th, thanks to a leadoff single followed by a pair of hit
batsmen and an RBI single to saddle Chris Wolcott with
the loss.

fourth but exploded for nine runs to put Monmouth away. The Scots
rallied with a four-run seventh on three walks, three hits and two sac
flies, but the damage was done. Drew Johnson was saddled with the
loss in three innings of work. Chad Kamm picked up three hits in
the loss. The Scots didn't allow any big innings in Game 2, but came up
short anyway 7-0. Matt Tye suffered the loss, going six innings
and allowing four earned runs. March 7, 2009 vs. Wheaton College at Phoenix, Ariz.
Game 1
Wheaton 6, Monmouth 4
Game 2
Monmouth 6 (1-1), Wheaton 5
Wheaton used a four-run second in Game 1 to give Monmouth a 6-4 loss
in the Scots' season-opener. Losing pitcher Brian Chandler hit
the leadoff man in the crucial inning and Wheaton delivered three
consecutive singles to get the ball rolling. Trailing 6-3 in the bottom
of the seventh, Terry Davis drew a leadoff walk and Willy
Mason got on via a free pass. A double-play grounder off the bat of
Billy Herrin moved Davis to third. He then came home on a
shortstop error before Wheaton got the final out. Freshman catcher
Brad Winkler opened his Scots career going 2-for-3. The Scots were
able to get last inning heroics in Game 2, winning 6-5 to make a winner
out of Matt Bourne. Chad Kamm opened the seventh with a
base hit and moved to third on Nick Basala's single and Wheaton's
ensuing error. Ricky Caruso doubled home Kamm and pinch-runner
Andrew Weidner to tie the game 5-5. Caleb Ruyle came off the
bench to single in Caruso for the eventual winning run. Chris
Albanese pitched the last of the seventh for the save. Herrin went
3-for-4 in the nightcap as the Scots banged out 10 hits. |
