MC’s Sound of 5 hosts ‘Accafest’Release Date:
March 16, 2007
MONMOUTH, Ill. — Monmouth College’s student-run, a cappella ensemble, the
Sound of 5, will join similar choral groups from two major universities on March
24 at 7:30 p.m. in the Kasch Performance Hall of the Dahl Chapel and Auditorium
for an evening of what the pop vocalists are calling “Accafest.”
Tickets for the event are $5 in advance by contacting the Monmouth music
department at 309-457-2171, or $7 at the door. “A cappella” is the term used for
musical ensembles that perform without instrumental accompaniment.
The Sound of 5 will share the stage with the Spartan Dischords, Michigan State
University's all-men’s a cappella group, and The Girls Next Door, an all-women’s
a cappella ensemble from the University of Illinois.
The pop-style Sound of 5 began its rich tradition at Monmouth College in the
early 1970s. Its founding members include Scott Stanton ’73, one of the group’s
primary instrumentalists who now serves as the director of the Newton Center at
Buena Vista University; Peter Hill, a former professor of music; and Richard
Griffiths, professor emeritus of music who taught from 1967 to 1999. During
Griffiths’ tenure, Sound of 5 received considerable recognition as it frequently
played to jazz and pop enthusiasts around the U.S. and toured Europe in 1987. In
1973, the ensemble was the first pop/jazz group to perform at the American
Choral Directors Association annual convention.
After a break of about six years, the group has been revived by students as an
eight-member, a cappella-style group that specializes in jazz/pop music. The
group, which elected to maintain the traditional name for history’s sake,
occasionally appears with the Monmouth College Jazz Band.
Comprising the ensemble are seniors Dee Jackson of St. Louis and Sarah Braun of
Morrisonville, junior Brendan Murphy of Schaumburg, sophomores Lynsay Ryan of
Onarga, Cassie Frantz of Macomb and Lindsey Jackson of Moline, and freshmen Tim
Seyller of Hampshire and Pat Murphy of Macomb.
