MONMOUTH, Ill. —
Seth Leitner, a senior from Edelstein, will present the next Archaeology
Lecture at Monmouth College on Nov. 12 at 7:30 p.m. in the Morgan Room
in Poling Hall.
Leitner will be the first MC student to give one of the lectures,
which are sponsored by the MC classics department in cooperation with
the Western Illinois Society of the Archaeological Institute of America
(AIA). Titled "Excavating in Romania: The Porolissum Forum Project," the
talk is free and open to the public.
A participant in the 2007 summer excavations at Porolissum
www.porolissum.org, Leitner will offer
background about the project and discuss some of the activities of this
season. Porolissum is one of the largest and best-preserved
archaeological sites in all of Romania. Located in modern-day Salaj
County, this border military center was established in 106 A.D. by the
Roman emperor Trajan to defend the main passageway through the Meses
Mountains into the province of Dacia Porolissensis.
The two primary objectives of the 2007 campaign were to explore the
presumed basilica on the north side of the forum and to excavate some 30
meters to the south of the forum’s courtyard. At the latter location, a
post-Roman pottery kiln was discovered in 2003 and magnetometry results
there indicated a series of round features consistent with pottery
kilns.
