MONMOUTH, Ill. – A snowstorm that dropped nearly a foot of snow on Monmouth
a week earlier couldn’t stop 11 Monmouth College students and a professor from
making a trip to visit a famous Egyptian king last week.
Tom Sienkewicz, Capron Professor of Classics, arranged the trip to the Chicago
Field Museum to view the “King Tut and the Golden Age of the Pharoahs” exhibit.
The idea for the trip came from Sienkewicz’ Introduction to Classical Studies
class and quickly grew to include interested students from the entire campus.
“This trip was very valuable academically for the students in the classics
seminar,” said Sienkewicz. “The students not only were able to view major
artifacts from ancient Egypt but were also able to consider issues, including
archaeological excavation, artifact preservation and museum display.”
Lisa Adams, a senior classics/history major from McHenry, agreed with
Sienkewicz’s assessment.
“As a future Latin teacher, it was a very educational experience for me,” she
said. “I found the burial procedures especially fascinating. I can now imagine
taking my students to exhibits like this someday and introducing them first-hand
to other ancient civilizations.”
The King Tut exhibit will be in Chicago through Jan. 1 before moving to
Philadelphia and London.
