Haywood, Beach to sign books at MC March 14-15Release Date:
March 8, 2006
MONMOUTH, Ill. — Monmouth College will be the site
of book signings by emeritus president Bruce Haywood and faculty
member Eleanor Ferris Beach on March 14-15.
Haywood will be at the Monmouth College Bookstore on March 15 at
10:30 a.m. for a one-hour signing of his recently-published book,
“The Essential College.”
Published by XOXOX Press, “The Essential College” encompasses his
half-century of experience in the educational field.
“The book is my effort to describe why the liberal education has
declined in the last 50 years and what might be done to resurrect
it,” explained Haywood, who was Monmouth’s president from 1980 to
1994.
Beach, a lecturer in the college’s department of philosophy and
religious studies, will sign copies of her latest work, “The Jezebel
Letters” on March 14 at 5 p.m. in the Morgan Room in the college’s
Poling Hall. The 192-page hardcover book was published by Fortress
Press.
“The Jezebel Letters” combines Beach’s biblical scholarship with a
fictionalized first-person account of the much-maligned Israelite
queen. In the process, she transforms the stereotype of the
conniving Jezebel into a more historically-based portrayal of a
powerful, literate woman.
Beach, who is in her fifth year of teaching classes at Monmouth, is
also on the faculty of St. Ambrose University. Prior to her book
signing, she will give an illustrated presentation entitled
“Interpreting Jezebel” at 4 p.m. in the Morgan Room.
