The newly installed members of the Beta Phi chapter of Phi
Alpha Theta at Monmouth College are, from left, John Hughes,
Benjamin Hunter, Patrick McGuire and Donald Latrofa. |
MONMOUTH, Ill. — Four Monmouth College students were installed this
week into Phi Alpha Theta, the national history honors society.
Benjamin Hunter, a junior from Biggsville, and sophomores John
Hughes of Lake Bluff, Donald Latrofa of Glendale Heights and Patrick
McGuire of Hickory Hills were officially installed into the national
organization’s Beta Phi chapter, which began at Monmouth in 1948.
McGuire will serve as president for the upcoming academic year and
Hughes will be vice-president.
Phi Alpha Theta was created at the University of Arkansas in 1921.
The local chapter meets approximately twice per semester, with
faculty or students presenting a short talk. That helps fulfill the
national organization’s mission statement, which reads, in part, “We
seek to bring students, teachers and writers of history together for
intellectual and social exchanges.”
