MC Professor Wins Prestigious Classics Award
Release Date: May 2, 2002
Tom
Sienkewicz, the Minnie Billings Capron Professor of Classics at Monmouth College, received a
prestigious award at the 2002 meeting of the Classical Association of the Middle West and
South (CAMWS).
Since 1950, CAMWS has annually recognized two or three
distinguished members of the association with Latin ovations.
These ovations, always a surprise, are written in Ciceronian
Latin and read at the presidential banquet, after which the honoree is presented with a
calligraphic scroll.
In the ovation written by James M. May of St. Olaf College,
Sienkewicz was described as a noble hero who communicates all things classical to his
students. May added, "Wherever our man goes, he kindles a love of the study of the Classics,
he preserves what is kindled, he extends what has been preserved."
Sienkewicz joined the Monmouth College faculty in 1984 after
teaching at Howard University. The 1971 graduate of College of the Holy Cross received his
master's degree in Classics from Johns Hopkins University in 1973 and his Ph.D. in 1975.
A frequent contributor to Classical conferences,
conversations and texts, Sienkewicz edited the three-volume "Encyclopedia of the Ancient
World," which was published last year.
