Two MC Students Help with Presentation at Conference
Release Date: July 11, 2002
MONMOUTH, Ill. - Two Monmouth College Classics majors, Jennifer Mitten and Michael
Fanucce, recently attended the annual American Classical League Institute at the University of
Wisconsin where their professor, Tom Sienkewicz, presented a workshop entitled "Using 'Forum
Romanum' in the Classroom."
Based on an experimental course entitled "Understanding
Spoken Latin" that Sienkewicz taught in the spring, the workshop used as its pedagogical focus
a series of videotapes developed by the National Latin Exam. These "Forum Romanum" tapes
present ancient Roman historical events in the format of a modern television newscast, with
all of the dialogue in Latin.
At the workshop, Sienkewicz presented the goals, format and
structure of the course, while Mitten and Fanucce each offered a student perspective and
suggested how they could use this material in the future in their own Latin classes. They also
led the 75-member audience through a sample class, including the use of oral Latin dictations.
Mitten, of Spring Grove, Ill., graduated in May with a degree
in Latin, and Fanucce, of Oregon, Ill., is a junior.
