Release Date: April 23, 2002

Bernard Barcio will present a lecture on ancient Pompeii at Monmouth College April 26 at 7:30 p.m. in the college’s Auditorium. His presentation, which is free to the public, is entitled “Marcus Loreius Tiburtinus: Citizen of Pompeii.”

Barcio, who is the president of Pompeiana, Inc., in Indianapolis, Ind., will portray Marcus, a wealthy citizen of Pompeii during the first-century A.D. Barcio will vividly discuss all aspects of daily life in the bustling, crossroads town of Campania. Family, religion, politics, slavery, economics, hygiene, entertainment, education, superstitions and many other topics will be touched on as a very believable picture is presented to the audience.

Marcus appears as living during the eighth year of the Emperor Vespasian just prior to the fatal eruption of Mt. Vesuvius. He wears the clothing and footwear of a wealthy citizen, complete with a brightly colored tunic, decorated with gold appliques and a toga praetexta.
