A quartet of former
Monmouth College student-athletes were inducted into the M Club Hall of Fame on Sept. 22
at Glennie Gymnasium. The inductees this year
include Bruce Stotlar ’71 of Springfield, Ill., one of only three Fighting
Scots male athletes to earn all-conference recognition in three separate sports; Dick
Corn ’72, a floor general for the Fighting Scots basketball team who’s gone on to
coach Pinckneyville High School to a pair of Illinois Class A state basketball titles;
Grant Minor ’74 of Washington, Penn., an all-conference lineman who played center
on the undefeated 1972 Fighting Scots team; and Angie Hickerson ’87 of
Washington, D.C., the only MC woman to ever win the Midwest Conference cross country
meet.
Stotlar earned his all-conference honors in
football, wrestling and baseball. He made his biggest mark in the latter sport, leading
the nation in home runs per at bat in 1971, when he slugged a school-record 10
roundtrippers in 64 at-bats. He also led the nation in slugging percentage (.951).
Corn scored 554 points in his career, which was
characterized by tough defense and his “coach on the floor” style of play. Three years
after his graduation, Corn took over the head coaching duties at PHS and has guided the
Panthers to 573 victories. His team has reached the state championship game three times,
winning the crown in 1994 and 2001.
Minor starred as a lineman who paved the way for
Hall of Fame running backs Dennis Plummer and Ron Baker. Besides earning two first team
All-MWC honors in football, Minor competed on the swim team and was a member of the 1974
Fighting Scots golf team which went 19-0 in dual meets.
Hickerson was a volleyball standout at nearby Avon
High School and played the sport her first two autumns on campus. As a junior, she
switched to cross country and won the conference meet as a senior. She also excelled in
track, earning four varsity letters and two MVP honors in the sport. Fourteen years
after her career ended, she remains in the top 10 of the outdoor track and field honor
roll in five events.
