Roy Sye

From sports to the stage, and from the lab to the set, freshman Roy Sye is quickly making a name for himself on the Monmouth College campus.

Sye hails from Arlington Heights, Ill., a city with a population over 76,000. Despite the immense difference in size (Monmouth being almost one-eigth the size of Sye’s hometown), Roy says he really enjoys life here at MC.

"I came to Monmouth because I really liked the small campus," said Sye. "There are a lot of activities here, and the not large class sizes. At first it was really, really hard to be away from home; I missed a lot of people, my family, friends, my girlfriend. As time progressed, I got involved with a bunch of different things, and it got a lot easier."

Sye is involved in a number of activities, including the Baseball team, the Scotsmen, the Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity, Chem Nutrition Lab, MCTV, and theater with the role of "Fred" in the upcoming performance, "A Christmas Carol."

He plans to either double major in both Chemistry and Secondary Education or just major in Communication.

Sye and freshman Kyle Earman are working closely with their chemistry professor to create a new drink.

"We want to give it to the marketing classes and advertising classes so that they can have a real experience, maybe sell it at the underground," Sye said.

He reports to having had a long time love of performing and baseball.

"Baseball has always been my favorite sport," he said.

Sye states he and his roommate, freshman Jake Barr, are doing well.

"We get along, even though we don’t have much in common," Sye said.

Sye says he really enjoys life here saying, "I love being here."

His favorite thing about Monmouth is being able to do many different things.

"I’ve always told my mom that I wanted to be a big fish in a small pond," he said.

He said he has much to gain from Monmouth.

"Besides an education, I hope to gain an experience to last a lifetime," said Sye.
